I truly hope that the last days of Summer are being spent creating memories with your friends and family. We have been through a lot the last year and a half and we owe it to ourselves to spend time relaxing and recharging.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the loss of a very good friend and colleague. Our Editor in Chief, Joe Alba, has passed away. Joe lived a very rich life with his family and friends, going back and forth between his homes in Westchester and Florida. He will be missed by so many that knew his quick wit, excellent storytelling and kind heart. Joe was a one of kind colleague and friend. He had the truest and strongest moral compass.  He taught me so much and I am incredibly grateful to have had him in my life for the last five years. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they continue to remember Joe and feel his love and light.

This issue of the Metropolitan Airport News is about remembering and paying respects to those we have lost. In that sentiment, we are commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11. We all have a story of where we where on that day. Those in the aviation industry will have a perspective that many don’t realize. It was so overwhelming that day…the seconds that ticked by, the decisions made, the loss of friends and colleagues, the never ending news cycle. I find it still overwhelming today. I’m sure many of you do as well. In grief and remembrance, we honor the lives that were lived to the fullest and lost on that day and are still being lost due to 9/11 illnesses.

Port Authority 9-11 memorial garden
In recognition of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, PANYNJ dedicated a memorial garden honoring the sacrifices made by Port Authority first responders and employees, as well as the sacrifices made by Port Authority rescue and recovery workers during and after the 9/11 attacks. Chairman Kevin O’Toole (left) and Executive Director Rick Cotton (placing the rose) attended the dedication.

On an upbeat note, we are seeing employment opportunities increasing all throughout the region and the industry. That is great news as so many people are re-entering the workforce or moving up in their careers. Now is a great time to pursue new opportunities and catch a rising wave as businesses grow and expand in our area.

Be safe out there!
