On April 23, 2018, Falcon Squadron, a JFK Airport based unit of Civil Air Patrol (CAP), hosted an FAA Safety seminar focusing on the topic of “Threat and Error Management.” The event, held in the JFK Airport Port Authority Administration Building (#14), was attended by over 2 dozen local pilots and aviation enthusiasts.
Guest speaker for the event was Delta Airlines Captain, Justin Schlechter. Mr. Schlechter introduced those present to some of the methods and techniques used by the airlines to recognize, evaluate, mitigate and manage risk, and spoke about how General Aviation pilots can apply some of those same techniques to their own flying.
Each year the Federal Aviation Administration Safety Team (FAASTeam) sponsors many such seminars locally. Their motto and ultimate goal is “Safer Skies Through Education.” Falcon Squadron has proudly hosted several of these Safety Seminars over the last few years.
Squadron Commander Major Roger Levy said: “US based airlines have the best safety record across all of aviation. Even though most of us who aviate will never sit in the left seat of a 777, we can still learn many great lessons about safe flying from our professional colleagues.”
In addition to providing a comfortable, media friendly location for the Safety Seminar, Falcon Squadron offered food and beverages to all in attendance, and a lucky few even received door prizes.
