Airlines for America Commends Passage of Long-Term FAA Extension

Metropolitan Airport NewsBy Metropolitan Airport NewsJuly 12, 2016No Comments2 Mins Read

Airlines for America (A4A), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, today commended passage of the long-term extension authorizing the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) charter through September 30, 2017.

A4A has consistently advocated for Congress to modernize our nation’s antiquated air traffic control (ATC) system, and reclaim America’s role as a leader in aviation technology and innovation. Passage of the bicameral, bipartisan agreement reached by House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA), Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Ranking Member Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John Thune (R-SD) and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Bill Nelson (D-FL), provides stability for the FAA while Congress works toward achieving these critical reforms.

“We commend Chairman Shuster, Ranking Member DeFazio, Chairman Thune and Ranking Member Nelson for their bipartisan leadership in achieving a long-term extension, ensuring the FAA will continue to operate uninterrupted as Congress works toward a comprehensive plan to transform our nation’s ATC system,” said A4A President and CEO Nicholas E. Calio. “Our nation’s ATC system is riddled with challenges that Congress must address before we face a crisis – this extension will provide the additional time needed to work toward that goal.”

Calio urged Congress to remain focused on reaching a long-term, comprehensive FAA bill that improves the flying experience for their constituents, rather than taking a step backward by attempting to reregulate airline pricing and services.

“Congress has a historic opportunity to deliver a transformational FAA bill that makes air travel better for everyone who flies or ships goods – modernizing our skies is a win for airline customers, employees and the overall U.S. economy,” said Calio.
